WHY WALK A MILE
To walk a mile in someone’s shoes sounds swell in theory, but we live in a world of division. We’ve never been so connected, and yet so disconnected. From my spec of the universe, honest storytelling has the unique power to bring people together.
Good stories let us to walk a mile in the shoes of just about anybody. I like writing characters from real life that people think are controversial. But when you go a little deeper (beyond the headlines), you see there’s just another person shaped by life experiences. We all know what they say. I want to write stories based on dramatic moments that let their actions speak.
I aim to tell entertaining stories without judgement. Entertaining because that’s where the magic happens; and sans judgement because it kills the magic. It’s not easy to do. No doubt there will be readers who believe the people I write about don’t deserve more attention. I can respect that. If I hear complaints that a story is boring or judgy, I’ll make the next one better.
I write about people making waves today, but my stories are based on past events. A little distance allows for a different perspective and makes the end more satisfying. It also get to dig through historical documents, buried archives, and old news stories. It’s a kind of time travel that I hope my readers also enjoy. For historical stories, I end them by sharing those documents.
Maybe I’m idealistic, but I’m not alone. Anybody who’s ever read or watched or listened to a great story understands their power. If anybody could write a single story that heals our division, please do. In the mean time, I’m going to keep writing as honestly as possible for as long as possible.
